Strangulation case set for trial

ESCANABA — A 21-year-old Escanaba man decided to be tried by a jury on one count of assault by strangulation and one count of domestic violence during a hearing in Delta County Circuit Court on Tuesday.

Kaleb John McCleese was arrested on the 10-year strangulation felony and the 93-day domestic violence misdemeanor in connection with allegedly assaulting a 26-year-old female at his residence on Nov. 28, 2017.

The victim sought her own medical treatment for her injuries, according to Escanaba Public Safety, the investigating agency.

McCleese, who has served three months behind bars, remains lodged in the county jail in lieu of 10 percent of a $45,000 bond. His bond was originally set at 10 percent of $60,000.

His trial is scheduled for Aug. 14-16 in circuit court. He has been ordered to have no contact with the victim.

Prior to Tuesday’s hearing being adjourned, McCleese’s attorney, Jayne Mackowiak, requested the court reduce her client’s bond because he has served 90 days in jail; a conviction on the domestic violence charge carries a maximum sentencing of 93 days in jail.

Judge John Economopoulos noted the seriousness of the 10-year strangulation felony and asked for a bond reduction motion to be filed by the defense. The judge also requested sworn testimony from the individual who would allow McCleese to stay at the individual’s home when the defendant is released from jail after posting bond.
