ESCANABA — People looking for new furnishings for their home or the perfect gift for a friend or family member may be able to find what they’re looking for at Country Roads Furniture and Gifts.

Cathy Cretens, who co-owns the local business with her husband Pat Cretens, said they have owned the store for 28 years.

“We started behind Dobber’s Pasties, in a small building over there,” she said.

Before long, the Cretens moved their store to another location.

“We moved to the mini-mall … four years after we opened,” she said. The Cretens built a showroom building in their current location on U.S. 2, west of Escanaba, in 2003; in 2012, they added a second showroom behind the first. As a result, Country Roads now boasts 10,000 square feet of floor space.

One of the store’s most popular product lines is wooden furniture made by Pat.

“He makes … lots of different pieces,” Cretens said. These pieces include vanities, entertainment centers, dressers, and more.

While most of the furniture sold at Country Roads is made by Pat, this is not the case for all of it.

“Our living room sets are handmade in Wisconsin,” Cretens said.

The store also offers a wide variety of gift items, such as outdoor and indoor decor, gourmet foods and dips, locally-made soaps and lotions, and candles, among other items.

“We sell a lot of gifts,” Cretens said.

Delta County residents and tourists have responded positively to Country Roads. Cretens noted that 2017 was particularly strong for the business.

“Last year was a very good year,” she said.

To keep people coming back, Cretens said it is important to regularly add new products to Country Roads’ inventory.

“We’re always trying to find new things for people,” she said.

Cretens thanked Country Roads’ shoppers for making the store’s continued success possible.

“We appreciate people shopping local — we love our customers,” she said.
