ESCANABA -- In the near future, area residents and visitors may be able to take part in haunted tours organized by paranormal investigator and enthusiast Ron Zelasko. Though Zelasko said he is still putting together an itinerary for these tours, there are several places in the area that have gained a reputation for mysterious phenomena.
One of these places is Escanaba's William Bonifas Fine Arts Center Theater. Sue Roll, business director for the Bonifas Center and a member of Players de Noc, said that -- according to local legend -- the theater is haunted by the spirit of William's wife, Catherine.
"The word is that Catherine is the ghost, and she does not like guns," Roll said. In addition to issues with prop guns malfunctioning during various shows, people have reported hearing footsteps while alone in the building at night.
Other supposedly haunted places in Escanaba include the House of Ludington and the Sand Point Lighthouse.
In Schoolcraft County, the Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse has become known for strange happenings. This lighthouse is said to be haunted by the spirit of its former lighthouse keeper Joseph Willie Townsend, among other ghosts.
Marilyn Fischer, president of the Gulliver Historical Society, said she has had firsthand experience with the lighthouse's hauntings.
"I've experienced them for 30 years," she said. She has written two books on the topic, as well.
Seul Choix Pointe may be one of the most prominent sites for paranormal activity in the U.P. -- it was featured on an episode of the TV show "Scariest Places on Earth." However, Fischer said she believes the lighthouse's spirits mean well.
"There's nothing scary there," she said.
