Sentencing set in Rock meth case
ESCANABA — A 22-year-old woman will be sentenced next month in connection with a methamphetamine lab which police found at her residence in Rock five weeks ago when her child was removed from the home and placed under foster care.
Angela Loraine Gutzman-Guerrero was one of three people arrested on meth charges when troopers assisted Child Protective Services investigate a child custody issue at the home on Old M-35 where a meth lab and other drug paraphernalia were discovered on March 28.
Gutzman-Guerrero was charged with one count of operating/maintaining a meth lab, a 20-year felony, and one count of purchasing or possessing ephedrine/pseudoephedrine to make meth, a five-year felony.
Randy Scott Norden, 40, also a resident of the home, was charged with one count of operating/maintaining a meth lab and one count of purchasing or possessing ephedrine/pseudoephedrine to make meth.
William Allan Saari, 27, of Gwinn, was charged with one count of operating/maintaining a meth lab and one count of delivery/manufacture of meth, each a 20-year felony, and one count of possession of meth, a 10-year felony.
According to court records, Saari’s charges relate to the March 28 incident when police apprehended him at the home. Gutzman-Guerrero’s charges relate to incidents from March 1-27 while Norden’s charges stem from incidents from March 14-27.
During a plea hearing in Delta County Circuit Court on Monday, Gutzman-Guerrero pleaded guilty to purchasing or possessing ephedrine/pseudoephedrine to make meth. She will be sentenced on the five-year felony on June 19.
During the same court proceeding, her bond was reduced from $200,000 cash or surety to a $10,000 personal recognizance bond, allowing her to be released from jail to reside at an Escanaba home. She was ordered to have no contact with Norden or Saari.
Norden, who remains in jail in lieu of a $200,000 cash or surety bond, is scheduled for a pretrial conference hearing in circuit court on June 6. Saari, in jail in lieu of a $350,000 cash or surety bond, is scheduled for a pretrial conference hearing on June 26. During these proceedings, each may make a plea or set a date for a trial.
Following Gutzman-Guerrero’s arrest, her child was court-ordered to be placed under foster care. At a disposition hearing in Delta County Probate Court on Tuesday, the court ruled in favor of a case services plan recommended by Child Protective Services allowing Gutzman-Guerrero to work toward reuniting with her child.
During a proceeding in probate court in April, Gutzman-Guerrero pleaded guilty to allegations of child neglect or abuse following an investigation of her residence by the Department of Health and Human Services.
