ESCANABA — After 28 years of providing groceries to Escanaba, Super One Foods will be closing on April 29, the Daily Press has confirmed.
“I can confirm that we are (closing). Any further statements will be handled through the corporate office,” said Escanaba Store Manager Mike LaVigne this morning.
The Escanaba Super One Foods is one of 38 grocery stores across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula owned and operated by Miner’s Inc. of Hermantown, Minn.
According to a press release from Miner’s Inc., the company was unable to reach lease extension terms for the Escanaba location, and the store lease will expire mid-year.
The Super One Foods building is owned by DP Management, LLC, a subsidiary of Dial Companies, a leasing agent that manages new development and re-development projects including malls. The company owns the neighboring Delta Place strip mall, as well as the Delta Plaza Mall.
Miner’s Inc. also owns stores in Marquette, Negaunee, Iron Mountain, and Ironwood, and there are no plans to close or reduce operations at any of the other Michigan Super One Foods locations.
Currently, between 65 and 70 people are employed at the Escanaba Super One Foods. Employees displaced by the closure will be offered positions at other Super One Foods locations where possible. Workers who are laid off will be provided with job placement assistance.
According to the Upward Talent Council of Michigan Works, a rapid response team also has been activated to assist with the transition and explain programs and employment opportunities to the displaced workers. A special job fair for those workers is also planned, but a date has not been set.
“Anytime a long-standing business in a community shuts down it does have an impact, not only to the local economy, but to the people itself,” said City Manager O’Toole, who has been in talks with the Upward Talent Council and the Delta County Economic Development Alliance.
News of the closure comes as a new Meijer superstore and Aldi grocery are working to open in the city. The planned opening for the Meijer store is May 22. An opening date has not been announced for Aldi.
