ESCANABA — A Bark River man was sentenced to at least five years in prison on a sexual assault charge Tuesday following emotional statements from the victim and her mother in Delta County Circuit Court.

Fredrick Anthony Grenier, 56, was arrested in May on five felony counts of sexual assault, including rape, involving a female child during incidents dating back to 2013-2015 in various locations in Delta County.

During a plea hearing in circuit court in October, he pleaded no contest to one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, a 15-year felony, and pleaded no contest to one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, a two-year felony.

On Tuesday, Judge Stephen Davis sentenced Grenier to a minimum of five years to up to 15 years in prison on the third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge, which involved the victim when she was 16 years old.

Davis also sentenced Grenier to 16 months to up to two years in prison on the fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charge involving the same victim. The two sentences are to be served concurrently.

In exchange for these two pleas, the court dismissed four felonies against Grenier including one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, also known as rape, and three additional counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Prior to sentencing, in a statement to the court, the victim’s mother questioned the defendant’s reduction of charges and spoke about the negative impact of his actions on her daughter’s life and their family.

The victim also presented a tearful and emotional statement during the court proceeding, which was attended by more than two dozen individuals supporting her.

Judge Davis later commented there are no words to describe the agony experienced by the victim.

In addition to the two prison terms, Grenier was ordered to pay a total of $326 in fines and costs and $786 in restitution. He is required to register as a sex offender. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim or her family.

Grenier was granted credit for serving 208 days in the county jail where he had been lodged in lieu of 10 percent of a $200,000 bond.
