ST. IGNACE – A Mackinac County man, recently convicted of fatally shooting his father two years ago, was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison Wednesday in Mackinac County Circuit Court.
Richard Allan McKenzie Jr., 56, shot his 75-year-old father, Richard McKenzie Sr., at the victim’s home in St. Ignace Township on Oct. 24, 2014.
Following several court delays during the past two years – including a competency hearing, appointment of a new judge on the case, and several other motions – in September, McKenzie pleaded guilty to killing his father.
He was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years to up to life in prison on one count of second-degree murder. He was also sentenced to two years in prison on one count of felony firearm.
In addition, he was ordered to pay $926 in fines and costs and $10,000 restitution.
McKenzie was originally charged in 2014 with first-degree murder and felony firearm following the fatal shooting which was investigated by Michigan State Police, who were dispatched to the scene.
Investigators said the father had telephoned his daughter and told her that his son had shot him through his house window. Troopers found the son on the floor in the barn where he had crawled through a broken window.
Since then, McKenzie had been lodged in the county jail in lieu of a $1 million bond. He was given credit Wednesday for serving 746 days in jail.
