Gladstone Lions donate to nonprofit for steam engine

GLADSTONE -- On behalf of the membership, Gladstone Lions Club Treasurer Christian Tackman proudly presented a donation check of $500 to the Gladstone Michigan Soo Line Steam Engine #730 Authority, the nonprofit organization whose goal it is to protect the steam engine in Gladstone.
“This gift will support to build and operate, maintain, and manage a combined local welcome center, visitor information clearinghouse, and historical museum facility dedicated to preserving and celebrating regional history,” wrote President John Pickard.
The group’s mission is “to safeguard, restore, and provide perpetual care for historic railroad artifacts, rolling stock and infrastructure -- specifically including, but not limited to, the Soo Line Steam Engine #730; and to collect, archive, display and interpret artifacts, documents and narratives that reflect the broader community heritage, civic development and industrial lineage of the region for the education, benefit and enjoyment of future generations.”
Members of both organizations note the importance of this mission to the broader Gladstone community.
“Without the Soo Line Railroad, Gladstone would not exist as a city, and it is imperative to not forget the local history for future generations,” said Lions Club Secretary Joe Maki.
The funds for the donation were raised through Motor Mayhem Car and Fourth of July activities by the club.
