MENOMINEE - The M&M Children’s Museum is excited to welcome local chalk artist Janessa Schaut as the featured artist at the kick-off of this year’s Block Party Chalkfest on Friday, August 7, from noon to 6 p.m. at Marina Park and along the sidewalks of 1st Street in Menominee.

A hometown artist, Schaut grew up in the area and studied graphic design and photography. Her passion for art began in childhood, when she filled notebooks with drawings of birds and her favorite Pokémon characters. Today, she has competed in more than 25 chalk festivals, creating stunning large-scale works featuring animals, movie posters and pop culture icons.

Visitors are invited to stop by throughout the afternoon to watch Schaut transform the sidewalk into a colorful work of art. Seeing her creative process unfold is a unique opportunity for aspiring artists and families alike.

The free E Chalkfest Kick-Off Event welcomes artists of all ages and skill levels. Participants can register and pick up chalk and an assigned drawing space at Marina Park. Competition categories include:

-- Ages 10 and Under

-- Ages 11 to 17

-- Ages 18 plus

-- Groups (up to six participants)

Prizes will be awarded to winners in each category.

For the safety of all participants, children must be accompanied by a chaperone.
