ESCANABA — The community is invited to support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking at the upcoming Flannel For A Cause fundraiser hosted by Tri-County Safe Harbor at the Island Resort & Casino on April 25.

Organizers say the event, which runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. EST, offers a fun and flexible way for people to give back, as well as for those planning to attend the Trace Adkins concert at the casino that same evening.

“Even if you’re heading to the concert, you can still purchase fundraiser tickets to join us for dinner, bid in the silent auction, enjoy that Yooper spirit, while helping support survivors in our community,” said Liz Reed, Tri-County Safe Harbor executive director. “Flannel For A Cause is designed so people can participate before the show and still make it to their seats on time.”

Guest attending Flannel For A Cause are encouraged to wear their favorite flannel and enjoy the activities to support the mission of Tri-County Safe Harbor.

Tickets are available to purchase at www.safe3c.com or by contacting Tri-County Safe Harbor at 906-553-7357.

Tri-County Safe Harbor provides confidential shelter, advocacy and support services to survivors throughout Menominee, Delta and Schoolcraft counties, covering a geographic service area of more than 5,100 square miles.

During Fiscal Year 2024 to 2025, which ended Sept. 30, Tri-County Safe Harbor provided extensive support services to individuals and families experiencing violence. 1,576 emergency shelter nights were provided to survivors and their children.

Tri-County Safe Harbor also reports they received 1,110 calls to the 24-hour crisis helpline and provided 2,216 individual support service units, 296 group support units, 48 emergency responses and crisis interventions and 1,239 advocacy and supportive service contacts.

Providing safe shelter and supportive services comes at a significant cost. During the last fiscal year, the average cost per bed night per client was $209. This includes expenses such as water, electricity, heat, security, food, supplies, transportation for clients, communication services, repairs, maintenance and insurance.

Like many households across the region, Tri-County Safe Harbor has also experienced rising costs. Over the past year at the shelter, gas and heating costs increased by approximately 31.4%, water costs increased by about 14.4% and electric costs increased by roughly 18.6%.

At the same time, funding for victim services has declined. In 2025, Tri-County Safe Harbor experienced a $70,000 reduction in federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding, part of a larger statewide decrease affecting victim service organizations across Michigan.

Because of these funding reductions, Tri-County Safe Harbor had to make difficult decisions last summer, including eliminating two part-time staff positions assigned to offices in Manistique and Menominee and reducing most staff schedules from 40 hours per week to 36 hours per week.

The organization continues to operate with a small team of dedicated staff members and volunteers serving the tri-county region. Residential Care Advocates cover evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shelter shifts, but staffing coverage can be challenging when employees are on leave or unexpected absences occur.

Despite these challenges, staff remain deeply committed to supporting survivors and to the mission.

“Victim services work is demanding, and our team continue to show extraordinary dedication to the individuals and families we serve,” said Reed. “Events like Flannel For A Cause help ensure we can continue providing safety, advocacy, and support for people who often arrive at our doors during the most difficult moments of their lives.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
