Building community leaders: Insights from a 2025 Delta Force graduate

Minding Our Own Business

Kaylee Hubert

The Delta Force Leadership Program was created to connect and inspire emerging leaders, helping them better understand our waterfront community while encouraging a spirit of service and engagement. It brings together individuals who are already making a difference and provides them with the tools, connections, and experiences to grow as leaders.

Rather than explaining why this program is so vital to our community, we’d like to share the perspective of someone who’s experienced it firsthand — Delta Force graduate Kaylee Hubert, who graciously shared what the program has meant to her at the chamber’s annual dinner Thursday night.

“When I first joined Delta Force over eight months ago, I didn’t really see myself as a leader. In my role as the Events and Alumni Coordinator at Bay College, I was busy, I was involved, but I didn’t consider myself a leader by any means. Leadership, to me, felt like something bigger – a title, a position, a certain type of personality. I wasn’t sure where I fit into that picture.

“Since then, so much has changed. Now, I’ve recently stepped into a new role at Bay College as the Foundation Specialist, and through Delta Force, I’ve learned how flexible leadership is, and how valuable it can be in different situations and within our community. Part of what helped me step into that new role with more confidence was learning more about myself and my leadership style.

“During our first Delta Force session, we took the DISC assessment, and I learned I fit into the Steadiness category. That meant I tend to value cooperation, patience, and building strong, supportive relationships. As the months went on, I realized that assessment revealed more than just my tendencies, but it helped me recognize how those strengths play out in leadership. I don’t have to be the loudest voice in the room to make an impact; sometimes leadership is about listening, encouraging others, and creating a sense of stability so people feel supported and willing to grow.

“That self-discovery continued all the way to our final session, when we were asked to define our personal brand and who we were as a person. When I reflected on who I was then compared to who I am now, I realized just how much I’ve grown. Eight months ago, I was nervous about Delta Force – nervous about being in a group with people I didn’t know, nervous about going to new places, and nervous about having conversations that pushed me outside my comfort zone. But each experience gave me a new perspective, both on leadership and on my community.

“But it wasn’t just about personal growth – Delta Force also gave me a new perspective on the place I call home. I’ve lived here my entire life, and yet I learned so many new things through this program. I visited businesses I didn’t even know existed. I had rumors I’d always heard debunked. I met so many who care deeply about our community and oftentimes work behind the scenes without any recognition. And I toured places I hope I’ll never have to see again – like the new jail. Every session taught me something new, and I often went home excited to share with my fiancé or my family, saying things like, ‘Did you know this,’ and ‘Did you know that?’

“Some experiences pushed me further than I ever thought I’d go. On Law Enforcement Day, I was absolutely terrified to ride along with a police officer. I remember thinking, ‘What in the world am I doing – I might die today!’ But by the end of the ride, I didn’t want to leave the squad car – I wanted to keep tagging along with Officer Stempki for the rest of the day. That moment showed me how stepping into the unfamiliar can lead to growth, confidence, and excitement.

“Delta Force has taught me that leadership is not just a position or a title – it’s influence, courage, and the willingness to put yourself out there. It has given me a new way of seeing myself, and a new way of seeing my community – one filled with history, complexity, opportunity, and people who care deeply about making a difference.

“I’m so thankful I was accepted into this program, and I will be a strong advocate for others to join in the future. For me, Delta Force wasn’t only just about becoming a better leader but also becoming more connected to the community I call home.”

Our sincere thanks to Kaylee for sharing her story and for continuing to lead with purpose. Her experience is a wonderful reminder of why investing in local leadership makes such a lasting difference.
