Steam engine nonprofit to meet today

The Gladstone Michigan Soo Line Steam Engine No. 730 Authority will have its regular monthly meeting at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at Solid Rock Church, 819 Delta Ave. The nonprofit encourages anyone in the community who may be interested in joining to attend.

While celebrating the Soo Line historical legacy and the community that supports it, the meeting will provide updates on the current status of work done at the locomotive site along the highway in Gladstone. Ideas for long-term future objectives will be sought for a historical museum and welcome center.

“Let’s not forget that Gladstone would not be Gladstone without the Soo Line Railroad and the No. 730 steam engine’s part to keep that history alive,” said Gladstone Michigan Soo Line Steam Engine No. 730 Authority President John Pickard.

The nonprofit will be at the Gladstone Farmers Market on Monday, Sept. 15, selling T-shirts, sweatshirts and coffee mugs. They will also be a part of Downtown Days on Sept. 27.

Donations continue to be sought for perpetual care of the train into the future. New donations can be made for the future Gladstone/Soo Line Historical Museum as land is being sought and building plans are being formalized.

All donations are being accepted by the Community Foundation for Delta County, 2420 First Ave. S., Escanaba, MI 49829. Checks should be made out in care of Soo Line No. 730.

For details, interested parties can call Pickard at 906-241-0888.

Starting at $3.50/week.
