Escanaba Senior High School top 10 for the Class of 2025  

The Daily Press regularly publishes a list of the top 10 graduates from Escanaba Senior High School near the close of each school year. Unfortunately, the list for the Class of 2025 is coming out late, but the Press still extends congratulations to these outstanding students.

KATIE AABERG

Katie Aaberg

Katie Aaberg is the daughter of Neil and Tricia Aaberg of Escanaba. Her academic honors included an academic letter, academic pin and National Honor Society. Some of Aaberg’s high school activities and hobbies included Art Club; Pony Club, where she is certified to the C2 level in horse management; reading; and snowmobiling. In her free time, she has started her own art business and enjoys riding her horse, Zorro. She’s also a fan of Formula 1 racing. Aaberg planned to study aerospace engineering this fall at the University of Michigan.

ELIZABETH DERKOS

Elizabeth Derkos

Elizabeth Derkos is the daughter of Anthony Derkos of Escanaba. Her academic honors included an academic letter, academic pin and National Honor Society. Derkos was a member of Silver Linings and a volunteer volleyball referee for Holy Name Athletics. Before leaving for college, she worked at the local Starbucks. She planned to study mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University.

GRACE HAMLIN

Grace Hamlin

Grace Hamlin is the daughter of Dan and Alison Hamlin of Escanaba. Her high school academic honors included an academic letter, academic pin and National Honor Society, where she was an NHS Representative. Her high school activities and hobbies included cross country, track and field, swim team, Key Club, Silver Linings and ushering. Additionally, she has been an altar server at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Parish, tutor, volunteer for special events at church and Holy Name Catholic School and a summer intern at C2AE Architecture and Engineering Firm. Hamlin planned to study engineering at the University of Michigan this fall.

MARY HOOK

Mary Hook

Mary Hook is the daughter of William and Deborah Hook of Escanaba. Her high school academic honors included an academic letter, academic pin and National Honor Society, where she was the vice president. Hook’s high school activities and hobbies included varsity swim team captain (four years), varsity cross country (two years) and Silver Linings. Outside of school, she is a member of All Saints Catholic Church and was employed at Splash Island at the Island Resort & Casino and at Barn on the Bay Ice Cream Parlor. Hook planned to study biology this fall at Northern Michigan University.

BRIANNA JONES

Brianna Jones

Brianna Jones is the daughter of David and Nycole Jones of Escanaba. Her academic honors included an academic letter, academic pin and National Honor Society. Her high school activities and hobbies included color guard, figure skating, competitive dance, Silver Linings and Mo Buddy Mentor. She is a barista at Jo To Go and teaches private lessons for figure skating. Jones planned to pursue a degree in speech language pathology this fall at Northern Michigan University.

SAMANTHA KORPI

Samantha Korpi

Samantha Korpi is the daughter of Chris and Corrie Korpi of Gladstone. Her academic honors included an academic letter, academic pin and National Honor Society. Her hobbies include playing tennis, reading, crafting, sewing, biking and hanging out with friends and family. In tennis, Korpi was named Great Northern Conference Champion for 2024-2025 and was a U.P. Finals runner-up both her junior and senior year. She also made the All-UP Honors Team in 2023 and 2024. Korpi has skated and competed with the Escanaba Area Figure Skating Team all four years of high school and individually since 2011. She earned USFSA National Gold Medal for Partnered Ice Dance. Korpi was a member of student council, Key Club and Silver Linings. Outside of school, Korpi has volunteered as a Learn to Skate coach, a tutor and at her church. She was most recently employed at Gladstone Domino’s. She planned to study biomedical engineering this fall at Michigan Technological University.

SOPHIA LACOSSE

Sophia LaCosse

Sophia LaCosse is the daughter of Ken and Karen LaCosse of Escanaba. Her academic honors included an academic letter, academic pin and National Honor Society. LaCosse also earned her athletic and performing arts letters. Her high school hobbies and activities included sideling cheer, bowling, color guard, solo and ensemble, musical hair and makeup crew, and pep band. She most recently worked as a hostess at the Freshwater Tavern. This fall, LaCosse planned to study engineering at Bay College then transfer to Michigan State University.

SONYA MAKI

Sonya Maki

Sonya Maki is the daughter of Michael and Laura Maki of Gladstone. Her academic honors included an academic letter, academic pin and National Honor Society. Her high school activities and hobbies include tennis, track and field, marching band, colorguard, Silver Linings, ushering club, baking and skiing. Maki is currently employed at Barn on the Bay Ice Cream Parlor. She intended to attend Bay College this fall to study pre-professional health.

MAGGIE MARTIN

Maggie Martin

Maggie Martin is the daughter of Steve and Theresa Martin of Escanaba. Her academic honors include an academic letter, academic pin, and National Honor Society. Her high school activities and hobbies include figure skating, tennis, track and field, President of student council, Business Professionals of America, Silver Linings, tutoring and being a figure skating coach. After graduation, Martin planned to attend the University of Michigan to study marketing.

VY NGUYEN

Vy Nguyen

Vy Nguyen is the daughter of Dung and Hien Nguyen of Escanaba. Her academic honors included an academic letter, academic pin, and National Honor Society. Her high school activities and hobbies included robotics (lead – four years), art club (treasurer – five years), EHS Musical (left-stage manager – four years), Usher Project (head usher – four years), Key Club (three years), Silver Linings (four years), NHS (president – two years), ICES (American ambassador – three years), Lighthouse Team (two years), Book Club (one year), student council (vice president – two years) and Yearbook Club (one year). In her free time, Nguyen loves to travel, watch shows, go bike riding, hiking, listen to music and try new things. She has been an activities aid at Christian Park Healthcare Center for three years, working with nurses and aids in taking care of residents. Additionally, she volunteers for various organizations such as GFWC, Salvation Army and Tri-County Safe Harbor. Nguyen planned to study nursing at Saginaw Valley State University toward becoming a CRNA or PA.
