Credit union issues alert on text message scam

MANISTIQUE — Limestone Financial Credit Union is warning the community about a widespread phishing scam involving fraudulent text messages falsely claiming to be from Limestone’s fraud department.

These deceptive messages reference suspicious debit card activity or claim that a member’s account has experience unusual activity. Recipients are prompted to respond to confirm whether the transaction is authorized. Once a response is logged, the scammers call to “verify” account details, often asking for debit card numbers, PINs, or online banking credentials.

Importantly, many individuals receiving these messages are not even members of Limestone Financial Credit Union. This suggests the scam is part of a broader phishing campaign, using the credit union’s name to create a false sense of legitimacy. “This is a classic example of a phishing scam where fraudsters cast a wide net, hoping to trick recipients into handing over sensitive information,” said Jennifer C. Watson, CEO, at Limestone FCU. “We want to be absolutely clear: Limestone will never contact you via text asking for personal banking credentials.”
