Escanaba down to one cab company
ESCANABA — After the death of JN Taxi, the local cab company in Escanaba, in early May, two other taxi service providers from the western Upper Peninsula rushed in to fill the void. One of them was active less than a week.
Kacalo City Cab from Kingsford, which was very briefly operating with one driver in Escanaba that didn’t work out, hopes to return to the community soon.
Get-a-Cab, which is from Iron Mountain and also began to appear in Escanaba around the same time — Memorial Day weekend — continues to offer rides in its green-lettered taxis.
Get-a-Cab Manager TJ McCarthy said that all their drivers undergo background checks and drug tests and that a friendly demeanor is a requirement, too.
He said rides from Get-a-Cab are available in the Escanaba area 24-7. Courier services are also in their repertoire.
Right now, the company has a flat rate for within city limits and offers discounts to certain qualifying individuals, such as veterans and seniors. McCarthy said that prices may change as they learn more about the city and its needs. Get-A-Cab may bring in more cars if demand increases.
Kacalo City Cab Owner Ed Kacalo said that he intends to hire more drivers in Escanaba and expects to be operating in Delta County again soon.
In the meantime, Get-a-Cab’s number is 866-GETACAB (866-438-2222).
