Delta County townships approve millages
Several Delta County townships had millages on the ballot in Tuesday’s election. They include:
BALDWIN TOWNSHIP ROAD MILLAGE
Baldwin Township voters approved a road millage requesting a renewal of 1.5 mills ($1.50 per $1,000 of taxable value) for the purpose of funding road improvements, road repairs, road maintenance and bridge construction and repair. The millage will be levied for five years — 2025-2029, inclusive — and will raise an estimated $57,249 in the first year levied.
The millage was passed with 107 votes (66.46%) in support and 54 votes (33.54%) opposed.
BALDWIN TOWNSHIP FIRE PROTECTION MILLAGE
Baldwin Township residents approved a millage levying 1.5 mills ($1.50 per $1,000 fo taxable value) for the purpose of providing financing for fire safety related motor vehicles, apparatus, or equipment. The fire protection millage will be levied for five years — 2025-2029, inclusive — and will raise an estimated $57,249 in the first year.
The millage was passed with 120 votes (72.73%) in support and 45 votes (27.27%) opposed.
CORNELL TOWNSHIP OPERATING MILLAGE
Cornell residents re-approved the township’s expired operating millage and increased that millage to the millage rate originally approved by voters, which was 1 mill ($1 per $1,000 of taxable value).
Operating millages like the one in Cornell Township are affected by the Headlee Amendment, a 1978 law that tied tax revenue to inflation and forced many millages approved by voters to be levied at less than the approved amount.
In this case, voters re-approved the full 1 mill for a period of 10 years, 2024-2033 inclusive, for township operations. Because the millage had already been returned to one mill prior to its expiration, the millage is functionally a renewal without any change in the tax rate for residents.
The millage will raise an estimated $24,174 in the first year levied. It was passed with 65 votes (57.52%) in support and 48 votes (42.48%) opposed.
CORNELL TOWNSHIP ROAD MILLAGE
Cornell residents voted to renew a 1 mill ($1 per $1,000 of taxable value) for a period of five years, 2025 to 2029 inclusive, to improve township roads.
The millage will raise an estimated $24,174 in the first year levied. It passed with 78 votes (68.42%) in support and 36 votes (31.58%) opposed.
