Bay College students win LAND writing contest

ESCANABA — Each year, Bay College and all of Michigan’s community colleges participate in the Liberal Arts Network for Development (LAND) Writing Competition. During the fall semester, Bay holds its own writing contest to determine which entries will advance to the state competition. Current Bay College students were eligible to submit up to two entries in each of two categories: creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. The top two entries in each category were awarded cash prizes and will advance to the state competition.

In the creative nonfiction category, first place was awarded to Sara Eggleston for “The Institutionalization.” The second-place prize went to Mandey Sauer for the essay, “The Other Side of the Window.”

In the fiction category, Spencer Jordan took first place for “And Other Duties as Assigned.” The second-place award went to Chloe McNeil for “Generations.”

Spencer Jordan’s piece entitled “Mother Superior” took first place in the poetry category, with second place being awarded to Fiona MacFadyen for the poem “Collateral.”
