ESCANABA -- The Trails & Tales Outdoors Radio Deer Poll will be held Saturday, Nov. 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Elmer's County Market in Escanaba. This marks the 25th year for the event. The purpose of this event is to encourage youth to get out into the great outdoors, to promote the legacy of hunting and gather for camaraderie plus it's a great event for the DNR to gather information on harvested deer.
The event was created by Tim Kobasic and he was also the creator of the stations' outdoors program -- Trails & Tales Outdoors Radio -- that continues to air every Saturday on all three stations, WYKX, WDBC & WRPP. He also created the program, "Deer Hunters' Report" which will air Nov 13 – 17. This program focuses on successful deer hunters stories along with tips from the DNR, hunting camp stories, processing tips, how to dress if you're thinking of having a mount, venison recipes, etc. Both events will have giveaways such as guns, processing, knives, gift cards from various sporting good businesses and there will be a random drawing at the Deer Poll for a shoulder mount for all youth entries by the country's premier wildlife artist, back to back world champion taxidermist; North Country Legends Taxidermy from Escanaba.
Tim Kobasic had health complications the night of the Deer Poll five years ago and passed shortly after the event. Tim wore many hats in the community and also worked at Rampart.
"Nov 18th 2023 is Tim's 70th heavenly birthday. Again this year, we will celebrate at the Deer Poll and Deer Report with the Kobasic family. They will be serving hotdogs and cake during the Deer Poll. In memory of Tim, the family has also created scholarships for youth pursuing healthcare and conservation careers and is funded by an annual golf outing in August at the Terrace Bluff Golf in Escanaba.
