ESCANABA -- The YMCA Summer Day Camp, YMCA Summer Care Program, and Camp Harstad, which is a partnered effort between the YMCA and the Rotary Club of Escanaba are underway for the summer of 2023. The Summer Day Camp is for children ages 6-12 and the Summer Care Program for kids aged 5-6 began on June 5 and will end on August 18. Each week of camp will have a different theme. The following themes for this summer include All About Michigan, Wild West Roundup, Heroes Week, Splash Bash and more! YMCA Summer Day Camp has been very influential in the lives of many Delta County residents for years with a variety of activities that include nature hikes, swimming, outdoor sports, group games, arts and crafts, and much more. This year the Day Campers will take part in outdoor education where they will learn about wildlife, orienteering, animals and more.
New this summer is the Summer Care Program held at the Wells Childcare Center for children aged 5-6. The themes follow the Summer Day Camp program.
Camp Harstad began June 12. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan near Ford River, Camp Harstad is owned by the Escanaba Rotary Club. With the guidance of the Escanaba Rotary Club the YMCA was asked to run a camp created specifically for children with special needs. Each year the YMCA welcomes 15 children between the ages of 6-17 to attend camp weekly. The program is designed for children with mild to moderate disabilities and are able to follow group instruction.
Coming back to the "Camp" this year is the "Meet Up & Eat Up" Program which provides hot meals to any child aged 18 and under. The YMCA has partnered with the Escanaba School District to have camp as a point of contact for any child to come and have a free hot meal daily.
