\CHATHAM — Forages, grasses and legumes used to feed ruminant livestock, are the U.P.’s largest crop by acreage. The Michigan State University – Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center (MSU-UPREC) will host a Forage Field Day to educate farmers and the public about these important crops. The event will take place Tuesday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the center, located at E3774 University Drive in Chatham.

The event is free to attend and will include a lunch featuring beef from the UPREC herd of Red Angus cattle. MSU’s Forage Specialist Dr. Kim Cassida will be the featured speaker supported by UPREC and MSU Extension staff. Field Day participants will have an opportunity to view research plots of alfalfa and grass used to feed livestock, and will learn best practices for managing hayfields and pasture in the U.P. Participants are also eligible to receive MEAP Phase I and MDARD RUP credits for attending. Those interested in attending are asked to call (906) 439-5114 to register for the event.
