ESCANABA -- It is likely you know a family caregiver - someone who regularly provides care to a friend or relative who has a healthcare need, a disability, or is simply not able to care for themselves. Being a caregiver can be rewarding, but caregiving can also be demanding and stressful. Family caregivers are at risk for physical and emotional health issues of their own, feelings of isolation and high levels of stress. They need help - a break from their duties now and then - some time for themselves in order to rest, recharge, and care for their own mental and physical health.
If you would like to learn how to provide that much needed break to a caregiver by giving the gift of your time to someone in need, UPCAP is offering the nationally-recognized Respite Education & Support Tools (REST) training. This class provides education, tips and techniques for individuals who want to provide caregivers respite from the responsibilities of caregiving. The aim of REST training is for individuals to learn the three key steps of respite support: Prepare, care and connect, preparing them for one-on-one time as a companion or respite provider.
The REST training will be held on Wednesday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Gladstone. The program is free. All materials and lunch will be provided. Class size is limited. Register online at www.upcap.org (click on EVENTS) or dial 2-1-1 for assistance. Registration ends when the class is full or on June 12.
Respite Education and Support Tools (REST) is an originally designed interactive training program. Volunteer or paid position placement is not part of the program.
