Birding trip Saturday at Portage Marsh

ESCANABA — Come enjoy a morning of birding with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. On Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to noon the DNR is hosting a birding event at the Portage Marsh Wildlife Management Area, at the dead end of Portage Point 11.4 Drive in Escanaba. Participants expect to see many birds along the 1-mile loop trail, which includes 0.6 miles of unpaved trails along a historic dike system in Portage Marsh, and a 0.4-mile beach walk along Lake Michigan.

Professional birding instruction and technical assistance will be available. There will be binoculars available for loan, spotting scope stations on our viewing platforms and feeder stations set up to attract birds. Portable restrooms, picnic tables and trash receptacles will also be accessible. All ages are welcome and encouraged.

To ensure that you have the best possible experience, be sure to wear appropriate clothing and shoes to dress for the weather. Please be aware that the trail system is not ADA accessible. Organizers highly encourage folks who are interested, to download a birding app to their mobile device, such as eBird, iNaturalist, or Merlin Bird ID.
