ESCANABA -- The Delta County Historical Society will be presenting its third (and last) program in this winter's series of talks related to the history of Delta County on April 5 at 7 p.m. This illustrated talk will be given by Charles Lindquist. It will be on "The Life and Times at Esky High in the 1920s focusing especially on John Lemmer, teacher and principal."
Mr. Lemmer would become superintendent of schools in 1935 and serve in that position for almost 25 years. In this talk, though, Charles Lindquist will be looking into his earlier years as teacher and principal at Esky High from 1921 into the 1930s. What did he contribute to the life of the school? Who were some of the other teachers and students we might remember today? Why would maybe the most famous college football coach of the era come to Escanaba to give a talk? Why would the students at the end of the decade decide to make the Eskymos the school's new nickname? What was wrong with being the Hilltoppers?
