ESCANABA -- The annual Phi Theta Kappa Awards Luncheon, honoring the 2023 All-Michigan Academic Team, was held on Monday, March 13 in Lansing. Students were selected based on academic achievement, community service involvement, and leadership accomplishment. The State Academic Teams are a division of the Academic All-American Team for Community, Technical and Junior College Students, an international program sponsored annually by Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges.
Bay College congratulates Cecilia (Cece) Pilon and Gabriela (Gabi) Boyle; they are Bay College's representatives on the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Michigan Academic Team.
Pilon will be graduating from Bay College this spring with an associate's of science in pre-engineering while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She plans to transfer to a University to double major in chemistry and bio-chemistry. While focusing on her studies as a full-time student, she also works as Bay College as a supplemental instructor and tutor for other students. Outside of Bay College she works part-time as a live-in nanny and waitress. Throughout her academic careers, she has served in Key Club and as president of her local National Honors Society. Pilon has a passion for acrylic painting and had the privilege of painting a mural this past summer in her hometown to serve the community. Cece loves her cat, video games, and enjoys movies and music.
Gabi Boyle grew up in Lublin, Poland but immigrated to London, England while studying at University in Poland. Boyle had plans to always return to Poland, but fell in love with the British culture and remained in London for 11 years. Boyle met her husband at that time and eventually moved to the Upper Peninsula. Boyle is a busy mom with 3 and 5-year-old boys, two cats, and a dog. Boyle has always had a passion for helping others, and that is why she has chosen social work and criminal justice for her majors. Since the war broke out between Russia and Ukraine, she has been at the head of organizing multiple fundraisers within the community to directly help Ukrainian refugees who were coming to the city of Lublin, and those that were in the Kharkiv, Ukraine area. Through all of the stress, of worrying for her family members safety at this current time, she has managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA. Boyle also works at Bay College as a social sciences Tutor for other students. She has plans to graduate this spring and has already been accepted to Northern Michigan University to receive her bachelor's degree in social work.
The Michigan luncheon is held every year in conjunction with the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA). Besides the All-Michigan Academic Team members, luncheon attendees included community college presidents, administrators and trustees, state legislators, and Phi Theta Kappa advisors.
