ESCANABA — The Delta County Cancer Alliance said it is honored to accept a donation from Kristen Goymerac, a local friend, neighbor, and relative who was diagnosed with breast cancer April 2022. Knowing there are many fears and emotions associated with a cancer diagnosis, she decided to twist the challenges of cancer by challenging our community to unite and raise money to support her two favorite philanthropies, Delta County Cancer Alliance and Wildlife Unlimited of Delta County.
Goymerac recently shared with members of the DCCA that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April and had surgery in May. Following surgery, it was determined she would need chemotherapy and radiation. She knew then that she would likely lose her hair, so she decided to take matters in her own hands.
Kris said, “So many folks have asked what they could do to support me, but often they’re not sure what they can do to help. I thought that this would be something tangible they could do to show up for me. I made a public announcement to all my friends on social media, that I would shave my head bald. And that whoever donated $20 to this challenge would have their name thrown into a hat. The winning name that was drawn would have the honor of choosing the design that my mom would draw on the back of my bald head.”
This act of kindness and compassion raised $2,500. The winning name was drawn out of the hat by Kris’s goddaughter Kellyn Gustafson, and the design (a hummingbird with a pink ribbon) was created by Sherry Lofquist.
“On behalf of the Delta County Cancer Alliance, we are so thankful for people like Kris who have taken the diagnosis of cancer to a new level of philanthropy,” Alliance members said.
