True North Quartet performing at Bay

2 min read

ESCANABA -- Bay de Noc Community College's "Strings on the Bay" chamber music series presents the True North Quartet performing next Tuesday, August 9, at 7 p.m. at the Besse Center Theater in a program entitled "First and Only." The True North Quartet has been an audience favorite of the Strings on the Bay patrons for over 12 years with their unique programming of the string quartet repertoire.

This year's concert will feature Felix Mendelssohn's first quartet, opus 12, composed when Mendelssohn was only 20; Peter Tchaikovsky's first quartet, opus 11, composed at the age of 31; and George Gershwin's only foray into string quartet writing, his lovely "Lullaby." The early quartets of both Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky have youthful vigor but are astonishingly mature as well. They are two of the standards in the literature. The Gershwin will remind you of a bygone era: imagine yourself sitting on a porch in the 1920s in Havana, Cuba, sipping a cocktail as the sun goes down.

Members of the quartet are founder and violinist Paul Lundin, violinist Joseph Deller, violist Janine Bradbury, and cellist Irina Tikhonova. All are active free-lance orchestral musicians and teachers in southeast Michigan.

Tickets are available on the college website www.baycollege.tix.com and at the door. Please note the start time for this season's concerts has changed to 7 p.m.
