Historical society resumes Outreach Programs

ESCANABA — After a hiatus of two years, the Delta County Historical Society is resuming its Winter Outreach Programs. The programs are slated for February 16, March 16, and April 13, all Wednesdays, at 7 p.m. The February 16 program will be held in the Heirman Center on the southeast side of the campus.

Rich Anzalone will present the Wednesday’s program — the one he planned to give in 2020 –“Another Wednesday with Bernie”. Bernie Schultz was the Escanaba Daily Press photographer who captured images of people and events in Delta County in the mid 20th century. His negatives are preserved in the DCHS archives, and Rich has scanned many and researched to identify the subjects. Rich and Bernie will guide the audience on a stroll through an Escanaba that is both familiar and markedly changed.

On Wednesday, March 16, Dr. Charles Lindquist, the society’s president, will look at what was happening in Escanaba during the 1930s as the Great Depression deepened. His program, too, will be illustrated with material from the archives.

Wednesday, April 13, Rich Anzalone will offer a program based on some recently acquired historical portrait photos in the archives. During the summer of 2020 Rachel Barnhard of Houghton donated her father’s collection. He was Paul Gerard, who had a photo studio in Gladstone and through the years acquired thousands of negatives taken by other professional photographers in the area.

Bay College is currently permitting outside groups, but with some restrictions and depending on ever-changing COVID status. Visitors are required to wear proper face masks covering both their noses and mouths while on campus grounds; gaiters are not an acceptable substitute. In addition, the society must collect information for contact tracing. Social distancing will be observed, and chairs may not be moved. If conditions change, the restrictions may change, as well.

Check the society’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/deltahistorical.org), the events page on the website (http://deltahistorical.org), or the Daily Press for any changes in location or for additional COVID restrictions.

There is no admission charge for the programs, but donations toward the cost of facility use are welcome.

Starting at $3.50/week.
