Social-emotional health programming offered

ESCANABA — Michigan State University Extension will be offering its social-emotional health programming again in 2020 on a quarterly basis on Wednesdays starting Feb. 5. The winter series will be provided at the MSU Extension office, located at 2840 College Ave., Escanaba, and the remaining series at the M-TEC building on Bay College campus. The quarterly programming being offered entails two five-session series. The first program series being offered, from noon to 1:30 p.m., is entitled “RELAX: Alternatives to Anger.” Through discussion and skill-building activities, participants will explore what anger is and what triggers it. This interactive program teaches participants calming down and de-stressing, the principles of problem solving, effective communication skills, and ways to forgive and let go of the past.

The second program series being offered from 3 to 4:30 p.m. is called “Stress Less with Mindfulness.” This series is an introduction to the practice of mindfulness to reduce stress, pain and improve attention. Participants focus on increased flexibility, alternative methods of relating in everyday life experiences, and self-care skills to feel better and find more enjoyment in life.

These health programs are for teens, adults and seniors interested in learning how to better manage their emotions, stress, and develop a more accepting and nurturing attitude and environment. There is a fee to participate and online registration is required. To register peruse MSU Extension’s events management website for these specific series under Delta County entries. http://www.canr.msu.edu/Delta/events or contact MSU Extension Educator, Tracie Abram at 906-235-2985 or abram@msu.edu.

Social and emotional health encompasses forming and maintaining satisfying and healthy relationships, taking another’s perspective, resolving interpersonal conflict, feeling capable and whole, expressing emotions, navigating stress, and having supportive relationships. Social and emotional health also involves having a positive sense of self — including developing a healthy sense of identity around aspects related to race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, spirituality and abilities/disabilities. As is true for all aspects of human development, social and emotional health must be addressed across multiple levels, including the personal, interpersonal, institutional and cultural levels.
