Schoolcraft County Health Fair Saturday

MANISTIQUE — The countdown is on for the 2019 Health Fair. The theme of this year’s health fair is “Uniting for Quality Health” with a vision to be interactive, family friendly and for people of all ages. The event is Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital. Visitors can tour the information booths and artistic vendors, receive their flu shot, complete free lab tests (Vitamin D, Thyroid TSH, Lipid Panel) and enjoy a variety of breakfast and lunch items from Southtown Creek Cafe. Families are encouraged to take their young children to the Teddy Bear Clinic with their own stuffed animals and visit the family centered booths for activities and information.

Free coats for kids and teens have been collected by the Michigan State Police, hospital employees and community members. Hundreds of new and gently used coats will be distributed at the health fair in the children’s section near the MRI dock. Weather permitting, plans are to have the AirMedCare Network Valley Med Flight helicopter on site to be toured by children and their families.

New this year to the SMH Health Fair is “Yooper Yoga” which will be held outside in the Healing Garden. Yoga instructor Amy Kraatz is offering free classes at 8:45 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Participants must bring their own yoga mats and dress according to weather.

Free peripheral artery disease, pulmonary function tests, skin cancer screens, video ear screens, blood pressure, blood sugar and chair massages will all be offered at this year’s fair. Schoolcraft County Transit Authority has offered to provide free transit rides to and from the health fair. Rides must be scheduled in advance by calling 906-341-2111.
