Highland sponsors Honor Flight fundraiser

HYDE — The Highland Golf Course is hosting a four-person Scramble Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 8, to raise money for the UP Honor Flight. Event organizers encourage area golfers to come out to have some fun golfing and raise funds needed to provide future Honor Flight trips for our local veterans.

The Highland Honor Flight FUNdraiser will feature 18 holes of golf, donuts and coffee, lunch and a dinner buffet. Prizes will be awarded for each flight. There will also be skins, a silent auction, bucket raffles and more. The tournament will begin with a shot-gun start at 10 a.m. Golf cart rentals will be available. Women’s, men’s, senior and combined teams are all welcome, and the ladies and seniors tee boxes will be moved up to “level the playing field.”

Entries are limited to the first 36 foursomes. Registration forms are available at the clubhouse (located five miles west of Escanaba on US 2) or can be found on the Highland website: go to www.highlandgolfclub.net and download the entry form from the “Event” tab. Registration forms and payments are due by May 31. There is a per team entry fee.

If you’re not a golfer but still interested in supporting the UP Honor Flight, or if you’re a business owner and interested in donating a raffle prize or item for the silent auction, the Highland would welcome donations. Contact Kathy at 466-2791.

The mission of the UP Honor Flight is to fly Upper Peninsula World War II, Korean and Vietnam veterans to Washington DC to visit and reflect at their memorials; memorials that stand in their honor. This “Tour of Honor” is provided at no cost to the veterans. Two trips are provided each year and priority is given to senior veterans — World War II and Korean survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. Vietnam veterans may also apply, but with 430 World War II veterans dying each day, priority is given to them. Applications are being accepted from all veterans who served from 1941 to May 1975 whether serving during war time or peace time, stateside or overseas. The next Honor Flight will be on May 22; Honor Flight 27 is scheduled for Sept. 18.
