Tree planting workshop in Manistique

MANISTIQUE — Now is the time for planning both fall and spring tree planting projects. Landowners sometimes hesitate to plant because they are unsure of what species of tree will suit their needs or how to correctly plant and care for young trees and wildlife shrubs to ensure long term survival. To answer these concerns, the Schoolcraft Conservation District (SCD), in conjunction with Wyman Nursery staff, will offer a tree planting workshop and tour of Wyman Nursery on Friday, Oct. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the nursery, located at 480N Intake Park Road in Manistique. In case of rain, the workshop will be held indoors at the nursery. The workshop and tour are free.

Workshop topics will include: choosing the right tree or shrub for the job, understanding the limitations of your planting site, how to properly care for bareroot seedlings and saplings, how to correctly plant a tree to encourage maximum health and growth, and protecting young plants from damage (wildlife, weather, etc.). Windbreak planning will also be covered. The opportunity to practice planting trees with a planting bar will be offered. The workshop concludes with a tour of Wyman Nursery, and each participant will receive a free seedling.

Although there is no cost for the workshop, registration is requested in order to have sufficient materials on hand. Register by calling the SCD at 341-8215 or by email, schoolcraftcd@macd.org. Information about the workshop and the SCD is also available on the SCD website www.schoolcraftcd.org or on the district’s facebook page @schoolcraftconservationdistrict.
