State Police part of commercial vehicle program

LANSING — Michigan State Police (MSP) motor carrier officers will be conducting inspections at weigh station facilities and rest area locations throughout the state with a focus on braking components. This enforcement operation is part of the annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Brake Safety Week and will take place throughout North America Sept. 16-22.

“Braking systems on commercial vehicles are complicated and contain many parts, all of which need constant inspection and attention to ensure proper operation and performance,” stated Capt. Michael Krumm, commander of the MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. “In addition to removing unsafe vehicles from the road, this program will help drivers and mechanics to better understand the importance of proper brake inspection, maintenance and operation with the ultimate objective of getting them from Point A to Point B safely and efficiently.”

The goal is to reduce the number of commercial motor vehicle crashes caused by braking system failures. Brake Safety Week data will help identify the rate of brake-related violations, the number of vehicles that have violations, and help identify related technologies that need to be addressed.
