Trapper O’Hearn to attend NTA convention

ESCANABA — The National Trappers Association’s Annual Convention/Outdoor Show will be held at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba July 26-28.

Among the many trappers and outdoor experts attending and presenting will be Red O’Hearn. He is from Iowa, where he serves as a director in the Iowa Trappers Association. Ever since he was a youngster, O’Hearn has loved trapping and the outdoors. He has trapped in at least 9 different states and has put up unbelievable capture numbers. For example: Seven consecutive seasons with over 1,000 raccoons. One of those seasons included 1,650 raccoons, 350 beaver, and and 150 mink. He also had a season when he harvested 640 beaver. During that season he got his skinning time down to seven minutes per beaver.

In the summer months, O’Hearn works at his beekeeping business and does some turtle trapping. Along with that he continues to be an ambassador for the sport of trapping.

“Red O’Hearn is bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge which he will share at the convention,” said Jeremy Lundin, secretary/treasurer of U.P. Trappers Association, District 3. “Persons attending his demo are sure to gain valuable knowledge on trap choice, set location and technique. Red is surely a ‘must see’ for all trappers,”

The convention features items of interest to all members of the family. There will be raffles, vendors, tailgaters, free kids fishing pond, and trapping/hunting seminars.

Many outdoor equipment vendors will be offering good deals on their wares. Food vendors will provide lots of choices, including “local” favorites. Camping is available on the grounds; however these spots along with local motels are already filling up fast in anticipation of the event. Over 6,000 people are expected to attend.
