There are some evenings that simply feel special from the moment people walk through the door. The recent U.P. Honor Flight XXVIII preflight gathering at the Delta County Commerce Center was one of them.

On Tuesday night, veterans, families, volunteers, and supporters gathered together ahead of the Honor Flight XXVIII mission to Washington, D.C., where Upper Peninsula veterans embarked on a trip created to honor their service and sacrifice. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, warm conversation, and most importantly, gratitude, as veterans prepared for an unforgettable experience.

The evening included a dinner and preflight reception hosted at the Commerce Center, giving attendees the opportunity to spend time together before departure the following morning while also exploring the Upper Peninsula Military Museum located inside the building.

Adding to the significance of the evening was the museum’s Honor Flight Legacy exhibit, which highlights the continuing impact of the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight program through photographs, displays, and reflections from past missions. For many guests, the exhibit provided a meaningful reminder of the memories, friendships, and gratitude created through each Honor Flight experience.

The U.P. Honor Flight program continues to make an incredible impact across the region by providing veterans the opportunity to visit the memorials built in their honor. For many participants, the trip is emotional, healing, and deeply personal.

Events like the preflight reception also showcase something else that makes the Upper Peninsula special ~ community support. From the amazing Honor Flight volunteers and organizers to donors and local supporters, it takes many people working together to make each mission possible.

As our communities pause this Memorial Day weekend to remember and honor those who served and sacrificed for our nation, the Honor Flight XXVIII mission serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving those stories and recognizing the men and women behind them.

It was truly an honor for the Commerce Center to host this special gathering and to welcome these heroes through our doors. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone involved with the U.P. Honor Flight program for all they do to recognize and celebrate our veterans.

May the experiences and connections made during the Honor Flight XXVIII mission remain a lasting reminder of a grateful community.
