Honoring veterans at the U.P. Military Museum
ESCANABA — Veterans Day falls on Monday, November 11, a day dedicated to honoring America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and commitment to serving and sacrificing for the common good.
In Delta County, we are fortunate to have a remarkable tribute to veterans from across the Upper Peninsula, the U.P. Military Museum, which brings their stories to life. To allow everyone the chance to visit and pay their respects, the museum is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at the Delta County Commerce Center, 1001 N. Lincoln Road, Escanaba.
For nearly two centuries, men and women from the Upper Peninsula have served in the military and civilian sectors to protect and uphold the freedoms of our country. The museum’s exhibits span from the Civil War to present-day conflicts, including poignant artifacts, personal letters, and diaries that offer a heartfelt glimpse into the lives of veterans and their families.
On Monday, tour guides will be available to share insights into the critical role the Soo Locks played in supporting troops during the Civil War and Spanish-American War, and the contributions of brave Upper Peninsula servicemen.
The museum also highlights often-overlooked stories, such as the Native American sharpshooters from the U.P. during the Civil War, the Polar Bears and Hello Girls of World War I, and the Fly Girls and wartime sacrifices of Upper Peninsula families during World War II. Additionally, visitors can learn about the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight, which originated in Delta County, as well as the ongoing service of U.P. veterans in modern military efforts.
Thanks to the generosity of the John and Melissa Besse Foundation, local businesses, and supporters from across the Upper Peninsula, admission to the U.P. Military Museum is free. Donations are still welcomed and needed to cover operating costs and support special events. If you’d like to contribute, please make checks payable to the U.P. State Fair Authority with a note specifying the U.P. Military Museum and mail to: U.P. Military Museum, 1001 N. Lincoln Road, Escanaba, MI 49829.
But perhaps the greatest way to honor our veterans is to bring family and friends to visit, experience these stories together, and extend gratitude to those who have served and continue to serve.
To all our veterans, near and far — thank you for your service!
