ESCANABA — Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of presenting to the Rotary Club about the importance of the U.P. State Fair. The members learned about the exciting new attractions awaiting them at the 96th annual fair.

We often share the following information with our community to highlight how fairs strengthen communities, foster social bonds, and enrich local life. Much of this is captured in the U.P. State Fair’s Mission Statement.

Preserving Traditions and Heritage – Fairs serve as living repositories of a community’s cultural heritage and traditions. They often showcase local crafts, music, food, and art, allowing residents to connect with their roots and pass down their cultural practices to future generations. These events help maintain a sense of continuity and identity in an ever-changing world, preserving the essence of a community.

Economic Impact – Fairs and festivals are economic engines that drive local businesses and boost the economy. From food vendors and artisans to ride operators and entertainers, fairs create job opportunities and stimulate local commerce. The increased foot traffic during fair season benefits nearby stores and restaurants, leading to a ripple effect that boosts the entire community.

They provide an opportunity for community members to interact, fostering social bonds that may not have formed otherwise.
