Things are hopping

ESCANABA — Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

A guy walks into the Chamber of Commerce in Escanaba and he says, “Your fairgrounds look pretty busy. Your State Fair must be getting ready to start?”

The handsome, youngish but decidedly not svelte fellow behind the counter answers, “Nope. Not until August but we do have a Pet Festival, Monster Trucks, car races, Armageddon on Wheels and music happening all over the county throughout the summer, just to name a few things.”

Ok, so it’s not a great joke. Honestly, I’m pretty sure it’s not really a joke at all but it did happen. Things are so hopping at the fairgrounds that someone from out of town stopped by the chamber for information and thought that we must be getting ready for the fair. And it’s not just the fairgrounds that are bustling but rather the whole county seems to be alive with activities.

Now, reading that last sentence may leave some of you feeling a little incredulous and I can understand that. Finding things to do does sometimes require a little research and maybe a phone call or two but I feel confident in saying that there is something out there for almost everyone. I say almost because I’m a realist and don’t want to have the one person out there who insists on being bored get mad at me because I said there is something for everyone.

A great place to start looking for ways to fill those summer days is to take a look at the Delta County Chamber of Commerce’s website. Just head over to deltami.org and click on the events calendar and you’ll open up a world of things happening in our area throughout the year. And if that’s not enough, you can follow the Delta County Chamber of Commerce on Facebook and see new events that get posted as soon as we learn about them. And if you still want more help finding things to do, you can send a quick message to us here at the Chamber at info@deltami.org and give us your name and an email and you’ll be able to receive a weekly message with listings of upcoming events delivered right to your figurative doorstep.

As summer begins, it seems that 99% of the people I know are falling into two categories. Those who have every minute of the next few months planned out and whose schedules would burst should they try to squeeze another event into their planner and then there are those who bemoan the coming of summer as nothing but 3 months of hot, humid, mosquito filled boredom.

If you find yourself in that first group, we hope you enjoy your summer, but we also hope you take some time to stop and smell the lilacs (I think there are more lilacs than roses in the U.P., but I could certainly be wrong). Don’t let the summer pass you by without taking some time to reacquaint yourself with this fabulous place you call home.

If you’re in that second group and feel like there is nothing to do but sweat until the leaves start to change, I would encourage you to give your slice of the U.P. a second look. I think you might be pleasantly surprised by what you’ll find.

Regardless of what you end up doing with your summer, we here at the Delta County Chamber of Commerce wish you a healthy, happy, and safe season. But seriously, get out there and enjoy it. The snow and cold is never as far off as you think.
