Column: Signs of summer heralded arrival of Memorial Day
ESCANABA — ESCANABA — As our waterfront community basks in the warmth of summer, the sights and scents of roasted marshmallows, bonfires, freshly cut lawns, and blooming flowers signal the season’s arrival. For many, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. However, Memorial Day carries a deeper significance beyond barbecues and gatherings.
A brief online search reveals that Memorial Day honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military, especially those who perished in battle. This day is dedicated to remembering the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, prompting us to reflect on their service and the freedoms we enjoy today.
Thanks to the dedication of many, the Multi-Use Complex at the U.P. State Fairgrounds stands as a year-round tribute to these individuals. The U.P. Military Museum, home to the Honor Flight Legacy and curated by Ann Jousma Miller, offers visitors a historical journey, highlighting the Upper Peninsula’s significant contributions and sacrifices during major wars and conflicts. The museum features unique artifacts donated by local veterans and their families, telling the stories of residents who valiantly served.
Visitors leave the museum with a sense of awe, emotion, and gratitude, making it an honor to be part of such a special initiative.
I hope that during Memorial Day weekend, you were able to enjoy the summer’s sights and scents, cherished your time with friends and loved ones, and took a moment for quiet reflection on the sacrifices made by so many. These sacrifices allow us to spend another beautiful summer in God’s Country.
Please consider visiting the U.P. Military Museum to see the beautiful exhibits created through countless hours, dedication, and generous donations from our community. Through the generosity of the John and Melissa Besse Foundation, community businesses and people across the State, the U.P. Military Museum is free to all guests. Visitors are welcome during normal Chamber business hours, Monday-Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Additional hours will be available during the summer and special events, with guided tours available upon request with advance notice.
Bring your family and friends to the museum and then thank those that have served and are serving today. Wishing you a peaceful, beautiful summer in God’s Country.
