Column: Help wanted – temporary employees for the fair

ESCANABA — The excitement of the U.P. State Fair has been experienced by many generations. The sights and sounds of the best week of summer have certainly created countless core memories. There are many ways that one can enjoy the UP State Fair. Exhibitors with their animals, artists with their projects, vendors selling their goods and youth gathering with their friends and riding countless rides- all experience the fair through a different lens.

One additional way for a unique behind the scenes experience of the U.P.’s largest event is to join the U.P. State Fair team through hourly employment or volunteer work. The UP State Fair offers a fun and dynamic short term work opportunity and a special end of summer experience! We are currently seeking enthusiastic, reliable individuals to fill the following temporary positions during the largest annual event in the Upper Peninsula.

Pre-fair and fair week setup: Work with the maintenance team for up to four weeks to assist in setting up the buildings and preparing the fairgrounds before the gates open to welcome more than 100,000 guests during fair week.

Gate staff: If you enjoy people and can provide exceptional customer service, this is a perfect job for you During fair week, gate staff, under the supervision of the Anderson, Tackman & Co. accountants, sell tickets, reconcile ticket sales, and assist with crowd control at the gates to ensure a smooth flow of foot traffic.

In addition to those interested in paid gate staff positions, businesses and organizations are encouraged to reach out for more information on in-kind sponsorship opportunities to provide staff/volunteers for gate positions for a specific time period.

Shuttle drivers: The main responsibility of a shuttle driver is to assist and safely transport fairgoers within a specified route ensuring passenger comfort.

Bartenders: Here’s another opportunity to showcase your customer service skills and your ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. A full week of grandstand entertainment is planned, and the concession stand within the grandstand concourse will be open for beverage and limited food sales.

All positions offer complimentary admission to the fair during off-duty hours and potential for future employment opportunities with the U.P. State Fair.
