ESCANABA — As the calendar inches closer to the highly anticipated annual U.P. State Fair, residents across the region are eagerly preparing for a whirlwind of excitement, entertainment, and agricultural showcases. With a 96-year tradition steeped in culture and community spirit, the event promises to deliver a memorable experience for attendees of all ages.

The U.P. State Fair has long been a cornerstone of local pride and celebration. From thrilling amusement rides to mouthwatering fair foods and live grandstand performances sponsored by the Island Resort and Casino, the 144-acres of the fairgrounds are primed to burst to life with the smells, sights, sounds, and flavors of this favorite annual event.

Preparations for one of the Upper Peninsula’s largest events have been underway for months — actually, since before the gates closed on the 2023 fair — with exhibitors diligently preparing their prized livestock, artisans perfecting their crafts, and culinary enthusiasts fine-tuning their recipes. Exhibitors from far and wide are poised to showcase their talents and creations, vying for top honors and recognition in a multitude of categories.

Businesses from across the region have also joined in the excitement, gearing up to showcase their products and services to the thousands of fairgoers expected to walk through the gates from August 12 – 18. The Ruth Butler Building marketplace will be brimming with fair favorites offered by new and returning vendors. With an impact of over $5,000,000, the fair serves as a vibrant hub of economic activity and commerce.

For families and children, the fair represents a playground of endless possibilities with carnival rides and games offered by Skerbeck Entertainment Group, a petting zoo, and interactive robotics exhibits promising hours of wholesome entertainment. From the excitement of midway and other free attractions to the timeless charm of agricultural showcases, there truly is something for everyone to enjoy.

As the countdown to opening day draws near, the anticipation continues to mount. In 142 more days, fairgoers will be able to immerse themselves in the magic of the U.P. State Fair. With its rich tapestry of tradition, culture, and friendship, the fair stands as a shining beacon of the important connection of agriculture and community.
