ESCANABA — Members of the U.P. State Fair recently participated in the annual Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions convention, an event that, year after year, proves to be a remarkable learning experience for our team. As we engaged with industry colleagues, exchanged insights, and explored the latest fairs and festivals trends, one of our esteemed members from Marquette County, Jackie Hurley, stood out and was rightfully recognized with the Heritage Award.

For nearly six decades, Jackie has consistently exhibited unparalleled passion, skill, and dedication as an exhibitor, judge, and then U.P. State Fair equestrian department superintendent. Her tireless efforts in maintaining the highest standards of care for the horses, her relentless pursuit of excellence in equine training and department management, and her profound impact on the equestrian community made her an exceptional candidate for the Heritage Award.

Beyond her technical proficiency, Jackie has demonstrated remarkable leadership, mentorship, and a deep commitment to nurturing the next generation of equestrians. Her willingness to share her wealth of knowledge and experience has not only enriched the U.P. State Fair but has also had a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals throughout the State of Michigan who have had the privilege of learning from and working with her.

I have had the pleasure of witnessing firsthand the dedication and passion with which Jackie approaches her responsibilities. Her unwavering commitment to the well-being of the horses and the equine community is truly commendable.

A humorous illustration of her unwavering determination and resilience occurred recently when the horse barn keys went missing. Instead of subjecting exhibitors to an uncertain wait for the maintenance department to secure a replacement set, she promptly grabbed a screwdriver and skillfully removed the door hinges, ensuring the check-in process commenced without delay.

It is without a doubt that Jackie has significantly shaped the heritage of the equine world through her decades of devoted service. The Heritage Award not only recognized her exceptional accomplishments but will also inspire future generations to emulate her dedication and commitment to the equestrian field.

The U.P. State Fair nominated and endorsed Jackie Hurley for the Heritage Award and believe that this recognition was not only well-deserved but also an opportunity to celebrate the profound impact she has had on the equestrian community, and the world of horses. Honoring Jackie with this prestigious award was a fitting tribute to her enduring legacy and we could not be more proud of her and her accomplishments.
