ESCANABA — “Big” Jon Sampson, a vocalist, entertainer and DJ, recently held a grand opening and ribbon cutting at the Delta County Chamber of Commerce.
Sampson offers a DJ service featuring oldies music from 1955 through 1990 for anniversary parties, birthday parties, class reunions, sock hops, restaurant/dining entertainment, etc.
A professional vocalist and electric drum player, he offers two-hour-long oldies concerts with impersonations of Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong, Willie Nelson, and Frank Sinatra. He also offers a two-hour Gospel music concert.
He also does one-hour vocal performances specifically for nursing homes/memory care centers.
Sampson, who also plays for fraternal organizations such as the Elks, VFW, etc., will be performing on Saturday, April 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Escanaba. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. This concert is free of charge; however, there will be a free-will offering to support several charities that Central United Methodist Church serves in the area.
Sampson, who is originally from Clarkston, Michigan, grew up in a musical family and says he started singing and playing the drums in his parents’ band by the age of 10. In 1993, he had the honor of performing at The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. For 13 years, he worked as a professional Elvis impersonator performing at many county fairs and retirement communities in Florida. He lived in Florida for over 30 years, and moved to Escanaba after vacationing here.
“What attracted my wife and I to Escanaba was how wonderful the people are,” he said. “We now consider this to be our forever home, and I look forward to serving the people of Escanaba with their musical needs.”
