Column: Major events coming the area in 2023

ESCANABA — Even with the snow on the ground and the plummeting temperatures this past week, the Commerce Center organizations are looking ahead with excitement at some of the large events our area will be hosting in 2023. There are many businesses and partner organizations working together to recruit new events for Delta County that will bring visitors here to enjoy the natural beauty and hospitality of the region.

This community has a reputation for rolling out the red carpet when events come to town, and we think 2023 will be no different.

Here’s a sample listing of some of the upcoming events with national appeal planned this summer and fall in Delta County:

Since 2011, the nationally recognized Sweetgrass Golf Course at the Island Resort and Casino has been hosting the Island Resort Championship. Come out to the award-winning course in June and watch the best of the best golfers participate in the Epson Tour as they try to further their golfing careers and graduate to the LPGA.

Once again, the largest trapping event in the nation will be returning to our waterfront community. The 2023 National Trappers Convention will be on the fairgrounds from July 28 – 30.

Bark River International Raceway hosts the annual Island Resort and Casino Off-Road Rumble in the UP in August. Enjoy the action when Pro and Sportsman racers hit the track for the 47th annual event.

This year marks the 95th year of the Upper Peninsula State Fair. Tens of thousands of fairgoers will experience seven days of midway thrills, concerts, fair food, wholesome family entertainment, and “blue ribbon” agricultural and livestock exhibits.

The Great Lakes Logging and Heavy Equipment Expo returns to Michigan in September. This three-day event is the largest of its type in the Midwest and it’s happening right here on the fairgrounds.

There are two very large events coming our way that will be announced next Saturday night at the Chamber’s fundraising gala Fire and Ice Under the Northern Lights. Stay tuned for additional information following the our exciting announcement.

We are looking forward to the nationally recognized events as well as many other local events that bring family and friends together in our waterfront community — events that would not be possible without the support and collaboration of numerous local organizations.

The future is bright for Delta County and the progress that is being made would not be possible without you. The coming year is going to be a great opportunity for us to welcome new guests and provide the top-notch hospitality that the area is known for. Thank you for supporting our local events and welcoming new and returning guests to town year after year.
