Column: Make sure to exercise your right to vote

ESCANABA — Election Day is this Tuesday, November 8. The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Please make sure and participate in the voting process and have your voice heard. I feel sometimes we take the right to vote for granted. If you want to get motivated to vote, take a stroll through the Upper Peninsula Veteran’s Museum, located in the Delta County Chamber of Commerce building. You can read about the many U.P. veterans that gave the supreme sacrifice to defend all of our rights. The many stories really paint the picture of the importance of our rights and one of the most important is the right to vote. The Delta County League of Women Voters held a candidate forum to help you better understand the candidates that are running for office. They also created a very informative “Voter Guide” document to help you as well.

On the ballot on Tuesday, are three proposals, the Attorney General of Michigan, Governor of Michigan, Michigan Secretary of State, The U.S. House – Michigan District 1, Lieutenant Governor of Michigan, State College Board Seats, Michigan Supreme Court Seats, Michigan State Senate District 38, Michigan House of Representatives – District 108, the Michigan 4th District Court of Appeals, as well as our local Delta County commissioner seats. These are all very important to our area and its future. The state and local leadership positions help us move forward with many of the initiatives in Delta County. We have many opportunities ahead of us that can really help our local economy, our businesses, schools and municipalities. Please take the time to review the information so you can make the best choices based on your beliefs.

We will be into 2023 shortly, where has the time gone? Delta County will have opportunities to increase the missing middle housing pool, improve the child care situation, add and preserve manufacturing jobs and keep/attract young talented people to the area. We can achieve many great things if we create an environment of cooperation and collaboration. Can our local leaders share a meaningful vision of success for the area that everyone can get behind?

Take the time to go to a city council or county board meeting to observe and share your thoughts with our local leaders. Get involved in one of the many board or committee openings in our area. If we all pull in the same direction we will have a very successful year and future.
