Column: Find the value in your employment

ESCANABA — The idea of finding ones purpose or meaning can be found among many sources; one of them being employment. A job can allow you to feel significant knowing that you are contributing value to the world.

Personally, I first experienced this when I dedicated my time to a specialized residential facility in behavioral health. My time was spent serving individuals with severe mental illnesses that struggled with highly aggressive behaviors, many that were deemed not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI). As my love for psychology and working with a misunderstood demographic grew, so did the rate at which I was becoming burnt out. Stepping aside from the behavioral health field, I struggled with the idea that my next job would never produce the same amount of meaning.

In some professions, such as health and human services, meaning and value seems to be more obvious. However, there is value in every job, in every position. This belief was solidified by becoming a part of the Commerce Center team. Through my position I have the honor to interact with individuals with varied roles and get to learn the value they truly add to this community.

When I began at the Commerce Center, I knew that the organizations were important, but I did not fully understand the functions which inhibited my ability to see the true value. Once I found the value I was amazed everyday by the dedication and passion in each of the organizations.

While attending a ‘Redevelopment Showcase’ event this week, I witnessed firsthand the collaborative efforts of the Economic Development Alliance (EDA) along with local partners including the DDA, city of Escanaba, and county leadership to enhance, promote and grow our community. This alone carries so much value, such as the meaning found in collaboration, and it only highlights one day of one organization within the commerce center.

What sparks inspiration and triggers a positive rippling effect is when you interact with someone who understands the value in what they do. So I challenge you to find the value in your jobs, in your actions, and in your words. Although there is plenty of negativity in our world, the silver lining still exists, and when we all strive to find it we become stronger as individuals and as a community.
