Every exhibitor and fair guest has a story to tell. From childhood experiences of showing horses, market animals and riding the zipper or Ferris wheel to winning grand champion in their favorite department. We want to hear from you! The U.P. State Fair Centennial Celebration Committee is looking for your family, farm and individual memories.
My name is Andrea Sorensen and I'm the superintendent of poultry & rabbits at U.P. State Fair. As an example of a State Fair Story, I would like to share my most vivid memory of being an exhibitor in the poultry dept. In 1993 I had a rooster named "Rommel" that had won Grand Champion Overall in the open poultry show. I had wanted to have his photo taken with his awards in front of the poultry barn. After setting up a table with his champion rosettes and trophies I set my black feathered rooster up on the table. While my mom took photos of the two of us, I noticed that a crowd of people were gathering around. So, I asked if anyone would like to pet my tame rooster. Suddenly a flood of hands had reached out to pet my regal bird. That memory of sharing my joy of winning with the public is my cherished memory.
Since then, I graduated from exhibitor to superintendent of the poultry & rabbit dept. And now I give my exhibitors the chance to have a memorable experience at the fair. Currently as chair of the U.P. State Fair Centennial Celebration Committee I am reaching out to you for your treasured memories.
As this year’s fair comes to a close, we invite you to look back and help us celebrate a century of memories. Whether you remember winning your first ribbon, sharing a ride on the midway, enjoying a favorite grandstand show, or simply spending time with family and friends, your story is part of the U.P. State Fair’s history.
In addition to historical displays, we are planning to showcase exhibitors' stories and mementoes for the 2028 Centennial Celebration.
