The multitude of leaves covered with hues of burnt brown, crimson red, and amber yellow blanketed the forest floor. Accompanying these are the crisp, cool, and frosty mornings, with a sharp bite in the wind. All of these are trumpets heralding the arrival of the season of Fall. Along with this are many traditions and activities--one of which is Halloween.

Soon you will hear the sounds of children laughing and talking cascading down the streets. Accompanying this is a cast of characters draped with costumes of different varieties. Along with the festivities and fun, as parents, we all want our children to be safe. Below are but a few examples to keep them safe:

1. Route - Before leaving for trick-or-treating, review the route that they are going to take. Remind them to only go to the homes with the porch lights on, and to stick to the sidewalks. In addition, don't forget to give them a cell phone.

2. Safety - Before the children leave, also place reflective tape on their costumes. Other suggestions could be giving them flashlights and glow sticks. This will enable drivers to see them.

3. Costumes - While preparing to setting out, check the length of the costumes, so they will not trip. To ensure that their field of vision is not impeded, check to see how their masks fit. Moreover, select costumes that are flame-resistant.

4. Culmination - At the end of the evening, when the children return home, take the time to inspect their treats. If there are still concerns, search for other options that will ensure that the treats they have are safe.

At the end of the day, as a parent, your main goal is to keep your children not only safe, but also to have an enjoyable experience. These suggestions and others may be of benefit to your children. I hope and pray that everyone has a safe and enjoyable Halloween.
