Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, the ground rocked, sounds of tremendous explosions reverberated down the endless city streets, and cries from the wounded and dying echoed down the dark alleys and byways. These are just minuscule descriptions of what occurred on that day.
During those fateful hours and days, we sat glued, listening to the radio and watching our television sets, a huge sense of loss and grief encompassing all. Wrapped in all of this was fear--fear of what happened--but more so fear of what was coming. All aircraft in the US were grounded, there were long lines at gas stations, people scrambled for additional food, while others gathered in small groups for solace and support.
Through all of this tragedy and turmoil, we were united against some unknown enemy, from where we did not know. In the weeks and months that followed, we continued this vigil.
Over time, these feelings slowly began to ebb. So, twenty-five years later, as we reflect on all that has transpired, we should center our attempts on what can be done to honor those that have lost their lives, the wounded and scarred, and family and friends. Below are a few suggestions.
1. Organize 911 benefit 5K run/walks - Funds from these events will enable individuals to help those injured or have lost family members in the line of duty, either in the US Armed Forces or as first responders.
2. Memorial services - Either attend the 9/11 memorial services; or if unable to do so, offer prayers for all affected.
3. Tributes - Document what to memorialize on what transpired during those days and share them with those that had not lived during those times.
4. Prayer - Continue to pray for all that have been or are still being affected by these tragic events.
As the 25th anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11/01 approaches, let us commit to preserving the impact by communicating its effects to future generations, through various charitable acts and prayer.
God bless all who have been affected by 9/11. I will continue to keep you in my prayers.
