Dear Heloise: Every skincare company claims to have the perfect solution to staying young, but the truth is that lines and wrinkles are going to show up sooner or later. For many people, plastic surgery, skin peels and $200 creams are out of reach and might not do anything to remove the lines on your face. The best thing you can do for yourself is to prevent these lines in the first place.
Wear sunblock during the summer and winter; moisturize your skin (don’t forget your neck); never sleep in your makeup; and eat a healthy, balanced diet. Add to this a little exercise and try to stay within 5 pounds of your ideal weight -- that is, no more than 5 pounds up or down. Yo-yo dieting can (and usually does) cause sagging skin and is hard on the body.
Find a skincare routine and stay with it, but remember, your skin tone changes as you age. So, the tints in your makeup need to be changed a little as your skin changes. A rosy pink may have looked great on you at 25, but not at 45.
If you smoke, please stop. This goes for vaping, too. Both are terrible for your skin. Take care of yourself and love the skin that you’re in! -- Anonymous Makeup Artist, in Hollywood, California

EYEBROW CARE
Dear Heloise: I have very bushy eyebrows with a mind of their own. I trim some of the long hairs, but I found a way to keep the hairs in place and pushed up. I bought a cheap toothbrush, and every morning, I spray it with a little hairspray. While it’s still wet, I brush the hairs upward with the toothbrush. My brows stay neat all day long. -- Carolyn J., in Ironwood, Wisconsin
Carolyn, there are also gel products available that can keep your eyebrows neat and in place. They’re usually not too expensive and last for a while. -- Heloise
PRODUCT BUILDUP IN HAIR
Dear Heloise: I have a problem with “product” buildup in my hair. I wash my hair every other day and use conditioner after each shampoo. I also make sure that I rinse out all the excess product in my hair. But my stylist still says that I have buildup, then tries to sell me some expensive bottle of goo to wash it out. How do I remove this buildup? -- Kathy, in Sioux City, Iowa
Kathy, mix together 2 tablespoons of vodka with 1 cup of seltzer. This will cut through hair product buildup. Be sure to use this as a final rinse after washing your hair. It’ll make your hair shine! -- Heloise
TUNG OIL FOR FURNITURE
Dear Heloise: I want to refinish an old dresser that once belonged to my great-grandmother. I’ve been told to use tung oil on it as the finishing touch, since this is what was originally used. I have no idea what tung oil is or where to get it. Can you help me out with a little information on this product? -- Wendy N., in Fairfax, Virginia
Wendy, tung oil is a nontoxic, natural oil that is extracted from the seeds of the tung tree. It is durable, and provides a waterproof barrier on furniture, and gives you a matte finish. No sealer is needed with tung oil. However, this oil is slow-drying and requires days between coats. It takes about 30 days to fully cure. -- Heloise
