Refreshing shoes overnight

Hints from Heloise

Heloise

Dear Heloise: Shoes can develop odors quickly, especially after long days. A simple solution helped in my house: I sprinkle baking soda inside each shoe before bedtime and let it sit overnight. Baking soda absorbs moisture and neutralizes odors. Shake it out in the morning, and the difference is noticeable right away.

After dealing with one too many unpleasant odors, I made this part of my routine. You can repeat it as needed. — Eric W., in Omaha, Nebraska

KEEP THE SHOWER FLOWING

Dear Heloise: Weak water pressure in the shower can make mornings frustrating. Mineral buildup often clogs the tiny holes in the showerhead over time. I fixed mine without replacing anything by doing this:

Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar and secure it around the showerhead using a rubber band. Let it soak for a few hours or overnight. The vinegar breaks down the buildup and clears the openings. After dealing with uneven spray for months, I tried this and noticed the difference right away. Remove the bag, run hot water, and wipe the surface clean. The flow should improve almost instantly. — Teresa G., in Phoenix, Arizona

A CLEAN BLENDER

Dear Heloise: Washing a blender can feel like a chore, especially after making something thick or sticky. I found a much easier way that skips the scrubbing altogether. Right after using the blender, I fill it about half-way with warm water and add a small drop of dish soap. Then I place the lid on securely and run the blender for about 20 seconds. The spinning action reaches around the blades and sides, loosening food that usually sticks.

I started doing this after struggling to clean out peanut butter and smoothie residue that seemed impossible to remove. Now cleanup takes almost no effort at all! Once the cycle finishes, pour out the soapy water and give everything a quick rinse. Most of the mess is already gone.

For the best results, clean the blender soon after using it so that food doesn’t dry inside. Be careful not to overfill it and always make sure that the lid is tight before turning it on. This simple habit keeps the blender fresh, saves time, and avoids the hassle of deeply scrubbing every time. — Olivia N., in Portland, Oregon

KEEP ICE CREAM SCOOPABLE

Dear Heloise: Rock-hard ice cream can be tough to serve straight from the freeze, but a simple storage trick keeps it soft enough to scoop. Place the ice cream container inside a resealable plastic bag before returning it to the freezer. This helps block out cold air and slows down freezing.

I started doing this after bending one too many spoons by trying to dig into frozen dessert. Now the texture stays smooth and scoopable without waiting. It also helps prevent ice crystals from forming on top — a small change but a big improvement when dessert time rolls around! — Brian C., in Madison, Wisconsin
